StoryWorld Sessions - Mainstreaming Marginalized Voices

with Carrie Cutforth, President & Executive Producer at Borken Creative

SALON: MAINSTREAMING MARGINALIZED IDENTITIES

As storytellers, how can we be inclusive of identities that are not our own? Who gets to tell whose stories? And how can we avoid common missteps and pitfalls when writing characters to reach underserved audiences?

Rabblerouser Carrie Cutforth will screen a demo reel for an upcoming interactive documentary to jumpstart an informal but lively discussion on the (mis)representation of queer and other marginalized identities.

The TOP SECRET demo reel to be screened is for a feature-length documentary that explores the representation of fictional LGBTQ+ characters on television, and the real-world impact that these negative or positive portrayals can have. (CONTENT WARNING: The video features depictions of queer deaths on television -- space will be made for those who would like to step out prior to the screening, but would still like to join back in on the discussions.)

Open to all creators who want to write it right and those frustrated by lack of representation, negative stereotypes, and queerbaiting.

The Blackwell family moves into a new, predominantly white neighborhood. One day, in reaction to the rash of deaths of young Black men; Faye, the mother, decides to combat fear and treat with an age old strategy of door knocking. A gesture meant to create harmony only escalates tension in relationships, freak incidents, and absurd micro-aggression to a point where the family learns up close what it means to be an outsider.

88

Detective Sica, who’s overzealous and looking to be a hero, is put under intense departmental pressure to solve a cop-killer case. Sica’s story dovetails with Brennan, an over-worked and anonymous assistant district attorney with mayoral aspirations. Brennan becomes a media darling after his younger brother Eddie, a rookie cop, is murdered. Brennan must decide whether or not to use his newfound political capital to jump his boss and run for mayor.

The Pilot, The Bible & The Pitch
A Master Class with Jacob Krueger

Whether you’re trying to sell an original pilot or get staffed on a TV show, to take the next step in your TV career you need more than just a great pilot or spec episode. You’ve got to understand how TV really works.

That means learning what producers, agents, managers, stars, studios and networks are actually looking for when they read your script.

It means understanding how your script, pitch and Bible must work together to demonstrate not only the hook but also the engine of your project.

And most importantly, it means learning how to network, pitch, and talk about your project in a way that makes producers salivate.

While politicians try to cope with the many implications of this new fact of life on society, across the globe people start to rebound. Some to live the life they want after living the life they were supposed to. Some to resume their life's work. Or in the case of Cody, who spent half of his first life in prison, for revenge.
